AAPA votes Professional Name Change

After more than two years of research, surveying more than 27,000 PAs, and entertaining more than a 150 alternative title options,  the research and branding firm WPP/Landor recommended that PAs’ current title of “physician assistant” was inappropriate for the professional role. Interestingly, WPP reported that more than 11,000 open-ended comments were received and that the title “ medical practitioner” was recommended more than any other title for the profession, including physician associate. This weekend, the AAPA House of Delegates met and passed resolutions to change  the professional title from “physician assistant” to “physician associate”. Although there was much discord and discourse regarding the professional title, the ADPA is confident that removing “assistant” from our professional title will better align us with our professional job description and better position the profession to advance our goals of increased access to care for the patients in our community.
