After more than two years of research, surveying more than 27,000 PAs, and entertaining more than a 150 alternative title options,  the research and branding firm WPP/Landor recommended that PAs’ current title of “physician assistant” was inappropriate for the professional role. Interestingly, WPP reported that more than 11,000 open-ended comments were received and that the title “ medical practitioner” was recommended more than any other title for the profession, including physician associate. This weekend, the AAPA House of Delegates met and passed resolutions to change  the professional title from “physician assistant” to “physician associate”. Although there was much discord and discourse regarding the professional title, the ADPA is confident that removing “assistant” from our professional title will better align us with our professional job description and better position the profession to advance our goals of increased access to care for the patients in our community.

On Monday, Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon signed legislation that repeals requirements for PAs to have a specific relationship with a physician in order to practice. This law also recognizes a PA's ability to practice medicine consistent with their education, training, and experience.

This is in large part due to Senate File 033 and efforts by the Wyoming Association of PAs to ensure that competent, capable PAs practicing in Wyoming don't have to unexpectedly leave their patient panels when a physician is suddenly or unexpectedly unavailable. This bill will improve access to care for Wyoming's largely rural population. Great job, Wyoming!

Utah passed S.B. 27 in the House and Senate this week, making history for Utah PAs. This legislation has important implications for other PAs across the nation. This legislation is significant, as it:

    • Strenghtens healthcare teams
    • Expands access to healthcare
    • Decreases healthcare costs
    • Allows PAs with more than 4,000 hours in a specialty to practice under a physician OR a PA with more than 10,000 hours in that specialty
    • Allows PAs with more than 10,000 hours in a specialty to practice independent of a state-mandated physician tether within that specialty

    Congratulations to the Utah PAs!

US News & World Report has just released their yearly job rankings. Although consistently in the top ten and often in the top five, this year, PAs beat out all other jobs to fill the number #1 slot for best job in the USA. Great job, PAs! As efforts to increase our footprint in medicine continue, the ADPA expects PAs to consistently rank as the best job in America!

According to the CDC, so far the 2020-2021 influenza season has been incredibly mild, despite the spike in Covid-19 cases throughout the country. CDC experts still recommend to get the influenza vaccine in late September or October and to practice good handwashing and isolation measures if one becomes ill. To read further about the seasonal flu, please follow this link to the CDC.
